Sheriff Trey Holleway is a native of Washington County and graduated from Brenham High School in 1988. He attended Sam Houston State University where he earned a degree in Criminal Justice and Police Science in 1992. Sheriff Holleway is a second-generation lawman and comes from a family of public servants.
Sheriff Holleway began his law enforcement career in January of 1993 with the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) Capitol Police in Austin. In 1994, he began working as a State Trooper with the TxDPS Highway Patrol and conducted traffic enforcement, crash investigations, criminal interdiction, and emergency response. As a State Trooper he was stationed in Montgomery, Fayette, and Washington Counties.
In 1999 he promoted into the Criminal Law Enforcement Division of TxDPS as a Sergeant/Investigator with the Special Crimes/Criminal Intelligence Service being assigned to the Governor’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit in Austin and also investigated organized crime groups involving gangs and fraud rings, along with public integrity investigations, para-mutual wagering, missing persons, and Executive Security. Following September 11, 2001, he was reassigned to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force in Houston and conducted International Terrorism and National Security investigations.
In 2004 he promoted to Lieutenant at TxDPS Headquarters in Austin and supervised the Texas Joint Crime Information Center along with establishing the Border Security Operations Center. In 2007 he began supervising field operations in the Criminal Investigations Division of TxDPS covering Southeast Texas and addressed criminal enterprise threats involving gangs, drugs, property crimes, fraud, and crimes against children, along with border security operations and he served as a Temporary Acting Inspector General conducting internal criminal and administrative investigations.
In 2017 he promoted to Captain in the Criminal Investigations Division and supervised, led, and managed the Texas Anti-Gang Center in Houston through Inter-Agency Strategic Planning to address gang threats with Local, State, and Federal Partners. He also implementing the Governor’s Violent Crime Initiative and managed the Threat to Life program along with continued border security operations and critical incident response.
Sheriff Holleway retired from the TxDPS in 2020 with 27 years and 9 months of service and then was elected as the Constable for Precinct 2 in Washington County. In 2024 he was elected as the 28th Sheriff of Washington County and was sworn into office on January 01, 2025.
Sheriff Holleway is a Master Peace Officer and a graduate of Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, National Sheriff’s Institute, and the Sheriff’s Executive Leadership Academy.
